John Snow (1813–1858) was an English physician, often regarded as one of the founding figures in the field of epidemiology and modern public health. He is best known for his groundbreaking work in tracing the source of a cholera outbreak in London in 1854, using what is now considered one of the earliest applications of spatial analysis in epidemiology.
John Snow is most famous for his investigation of a cholera outbreak in the Soho district of London in 1854. At the time, cholera was widely believed to spread through “miasma” (bad air or “vapors”), but Snow had a different theory. He hypothesized that cholera was a waterborne disease, spread through contaminated drinking water. During the outbreak, Snow meticulously mapped the locations of cholera cases in the area. He used a dot map, plotting cases of cholera around the Broad Street pump, a public water source. By analyzing this map, Snow found that the majority of cholera cases were clustered around the pump, while people living further away or who drank from other sources were less likely to contract the disease. Snow convinced the local authorities to remove the handle of the Broad Street pump, effectively stopping the outbreak. His work demonstrated the connection between contaminated water and the spread of cholera, challenging the prevailing miasma theory and supporting the idea of waterborne transmission.
Snow’s use of geographic maps to understand the spread of disease was revolutionary. His work laid the foundation for modern spatial epidemiology, which involves the use of maps and spatial analysis techniques to study how diseases spread across populations and environments. His cholera map is considered one of the earliest examples of disease mapping and data visualization.
